Notes from our CEO:
|
| We’re thrilled to share stories, updates, and successes from the Boys & Girls Clubs with our community and donors. Each newsletter is a way to stay connected, celebrate impact, and provide a transparent look at the work happening every day to support our members. In each issue, you’ll see our Mission Moment—one of the most important aspects of our work. It serves as a reminder of why we do what we do: to provide a space that children call home, where we teach, grow, and provide a safe place for them to be themselves. Being a member of this Club is not just a membership number or a physical building—it embodies the holistic care, love, and support we strive to offer every child in the way they need it most. Our goal is to foster an environment where members can discover new skills, build confidence, and form meaningful relationships that will last a lifetime. We hope this newsletter inspires you to visit, volunteer, and share your feedback, as we continue to grow and strengthen our programs together. With your support, every child can have the tools, guidance, and opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive in a space they truly call home.
Warm Regards,
Charissa M. Puryear Chief Executive Officer |

Summer 2025 at the Club: Adventure, Learning & Fun! |
|
| This summer was packed with adventure, growth, and plenty of fun at the Boys & Girls Clubs! From swimming to cooking clubs, members enjoyed hands-on experiences that built skills and created lifelong memories. Over 400 kids walked through the doors of our summer camps as we kept the wheels on the ground, with 41+ field trips taken this summer. Additionally, there was an incredible 89% increase in teen participation through our clubs and in collaboration with Granville County Schools. Each county had some of its own unique adventures: Franklin County campers boarded and toured a real airplane, sparking big dreams for the future. And the fun didn’t stop there—all camps came together for an overnight campout, an organization-wide pep rally, and a big trip to the zoo on air-conditioned charter buses (because even explorers deserve a little comfort!). Members also got hands-on with STEAM activities, from creating tornados in a bottle to designing and building architectural structures. They tested their teamwork and problem-solving in on-site escape rooms and strengthened their minds through fun literacy activities, such as super hero week, designed to reduce summer learning loss. Whether through cooking, swimming, exploring, or learning, our members discovered new passions and grew as leaders. Thanks to the support of our community, this summer was truly one to remember! |

Back to School Success at the Clubs |
| The new school year is off to an incredible start at the Boys & Girls Clubs! All of our afterschool programs are now underway, and we’re already seeing great momentum. Right before school began, our community came together in a powerful way. On August 10th, local barbers and hairstylists provided over 125 youth with free haircuts and hairstyles, helping them start the year with confidence. Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.also stepped in to provide backpacks and school supplies, ensuring students had the tools they need to succeed. Warren County kicked off on August 25th, welcoming members from Mariam Boyd and Northside Elementary Schools. Both Franklin and Vance Counties officially started programs on September 2nd, rounding out a strong back-to-school launch across our region. This year, our focus is clear: to support youth in both academic and social success. We are working hard to implement additional evaluation tools to track member progress, and every member will set individual goals to help guide their growth throughout the year. Just a reminder—through the support of our donors, we’re able to keep programs affordable. Families pay a one-time annual membership fee of just $12 and a weekly fee of $15 for afterschool programs, ensuring every child has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed. |

Granville Be Great Breakfast: A Morning to Remember |
| The annual Be Great Breakfast held on October 1st was a resounding success, bringing together community leaders, donors, and friends in support of the Granville Unit Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina. Guests were warmly greeted and escorted to their tables by proud Club members, setting a heartfelt tone for the morning.
The program opened with prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Club Code, led by our youth—reminding everyone of the values at the core of the Boys & Girls Club mission. Attendees enjoyed a beautifully scripted performance that highlighted the year’s incredible achievements at the club, followed by a dynamic interview Club kid Kylie and our CEO, who shared updates on the organization’s growth, impact, and future vision. A special shout out to our club kids from that morning: Aaliyah, Antonio, Camden, Chistian, Christopher, Gabriella, Kiley, Maciee and Justyce.
This year’s breakfast not only celebrated our collective accomplishments but also renewed our commitment to ensuring every child in our community has access to a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment to learn and grow. Mission Moment: "When the Club Feels Like Home" |
Submitted by Unit Director, Stephen Misenheimer of Franklin County |
| Club member M. had never spent a summer quite like this one. The Boys & Girls Club swiftly became more than just a summer camp. It became a second home. M., discovered new pieces of herself, laughed loud, and made friends she’d never thought she would find. I’ve been seeing this young lady since I was a 4-H Agent in Cooperative Extension and had no idea I would see her again. On our last day, as the doors were closing on our summer memories, M. froze. Those beautiful eyes welled up, and before she knew it, she leaned into my shoulder, her tears soaking in. She whispered, “I’m sad it’s over…. But I’m happy I got to be here.” It’s in moments like this; I understand what the Club truly means. It’s more than games, activities and lessons. It’s a family. In addition, when kids don’t want to leave, it tells us we’ve got to be doing something right. These things are also important feedback for our team to see the special place they have in our children’s hearts. Along with reminding me as a young man what’s truly important and matters in this life. |
